The art of coin cutting goes back many hundreds of years.  Noblemen would take a gold or silver coin and commission a jeweler to smooth one side off and have his loved-one’s initials engraved as a token of his love.  Sometimes, the jeweler would go one step further and hand-cut the coin, leaving the fancy initials in the ring.  The intrinsic value of the coin, combined with the applied art work would result in a treasured piece of jewelry that would last thru the ages.

I have been practicing the modern art of coin-cutting for over thirty years.  My goal is to maintain the absolute finest quality of workmanship that can be achieved with the same hand tools used centuries ago. I still use a hand-held jewelers saw while holding the coin down with my bare fingers. This is the way the ancient jewelers did their work and I want to continue that tradition.   I use modern, mostly foreign coins because the artwork is remarkable and the quality of today’s coins is outstanding.

There are other coin-cutters in the world that cut the standard American coins: Mercury dimes, Buffalo nickels, etc. as well as some common foreign coins. Most of them do a very nice job.  I started doing the same over 30 years ago, but realized there were some truly beautiful coins with amazing designs that would challenge my talents to their limits.  Some of these coins are scarce, some are quite rare.  Others are so intricate that they would seem impossible to cut with simple hand tools.  These are the  coins I seek out and present here as examples of my finest work.

All coins are available for purchase. I have hundreds of other designs - please feel free to email me at dbcouts@netscape.net with your requests.
